Vehicle Description Among die-hard petrolheads, the mere mention of Alfa Romeo conjures images of mighty pre-war Grand Prix racers and sports cars battling for honors in the gritty, dangerous world of 1930s European road racing.
Alfa Romeo, better than almost any other mainstream automaker, has injected its motorsports DNA into virtually every road car they've built since.
From humble family saloons to spirited roadsters and coachbuilt GT cars, Alfa Romeos feel alive with history, and that intangible quality and passion have endeared the Milanese firm to generations of petrolheads.
Alfa Romeo's pretty little Duetto (Italian forDuet) first appeared in the mid-1960s as a basic and svelte two-seat roadster based on the highly successful 105-series chassis, shared with the Giulia coupe and sedan.
The British dominated the sporty roadster market at the time, but the Alfa set to change that with its stylish and technically sophisticated Duetto.
Initially, it was offered with a 1600 cc all-alloy twin-cam four fed by a pair of Weber carburetors to produce 108 horsepower.
It came standard with a 5-speed gearbox, disc brakes, and of course, the indefinable quality ofAlfa-nessthat made it a hit with buyers.
While the Giulia Coupe and GTC were styled and built by Carrozzeria Bertone, the Duetto's design came from cross-town rivals Pininfarina and bore no resemblance to its stablemates.
The Duetto was the last project that the company's founder, Battista Pinin Farina, had a personal hand in, and he was rightfully proud of the results.
The beautiful design is characterized by minimal chrome, distinctly sculptured body sides, and the signature tapered tail treatment.
To many enthusiasts, the Duetto is the purest expression of the Spider formula and the most desirable variant from the series' 27- year production run.
This 1969 Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider is a fantastic example, combining the highly desirable 1750 twin-cam engine in the classic 'round tail' body.
It is the subject of a high-quality restoration, with recent sorting handled by an experienced Alfa Romeo expert, including a complete engine rebuild.
Originally a US-spec model, it has been thoughtfully updated to European specification with the addition of the more delicate Euro-market side markers, twin Weber carburetors, and offset chrome exhaust.
The Alfa red paintwork is excellent, and the body is impressively straight.
It exhibits consistent, even shut lines, and excellent stainless bumpers and brightwork.
It rides on correct 14-inch steel wheels with original hubcaps and period-correct Pirelli Cinturato CN36 tires, ensuring the proper stance on the road.
The Alfa Spider's cockpit is sparse yet stylish and functional.
This car features black leatherette on the seats and door cards, with red piping to complement the exterior finish.
Seats, carpets, and other soft trim are in excellent condition, including the dash top, which is free of cracks and shrinking.
The folding top is upholstered in durable pinpoint vinyl and is in fine condition.
Correct Veglia gauges and original switchgear feature on the instrument panel, and finishing touches include the original deep-dish steering wheel and 5-speed shift knob.
AmongAlfisti, the 1750 cc version of the alloy twin-cam 'four is considered the best iteration of this all-time classic engine.
Balancing the light and rev-happy character of the smaller versions with the power output of the larger 2-liter, the 1750 hits the sweet spot and gives the Spider excellent performance.
This car features a period-correct 1750, which was recently treated to a full rebuild including new pistons and liners, bearings, machined crank, and a full reseal.
When new, this US-market car would have used Spica mechanical injection, but that has been replaced with simple and effective Weber DCOE carburetors, as fitted to the more powerful Euro models.
The detailed engine bay includes the correct Weber airbox and washer fluid pouch.
Underneath, the chassis is correctly finished with plenty of fresh-looking suspension components and excellent detailing.
As part of the restoration, the brake were updated to the later top-hinged pedals and maintenance-friendly single booster brake system.
Thanks to a well-executed restoration and recent expert service, this lovely Alfa Romeo is ready to carve up your favorite winding ribbons of tarmac and represents a wonderful opportunity to add Alfa's sophisticated, stylish, and eminently enjoyable slice ofLa Dolce Vitato your stable.
