3L DOHC, 16-valve Cosworth four-cylinder (code M102) with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection Four-speed automatic transmission (code 4G-TRONIC) with limited-slip differential Pearl Black Metallic exterior (code 199) and black Recaro seats with fabric inserts (code 071) Electronic climate control, power rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, cruise control, power windows, power locks, heated and powered passenger sideview mirror Dual front airbags and anti-lock brakes AMG/Momo steering wheel, Remus dual exhausts and rear spoiler Monowiper and tinted glass How much would you give for a ?remarkably flexible engine, with a very flat torque curve and a wide power band? in one of Mercedes? smallest classic models, the W201? Having a small, but torquey engine in a car that weighs between 2,400 and 2,800 pounds is one recipe for high-driving enjoyment.
Made in either Mercedes-Benz?s factories in Bremen or Sindelfingen on January 15, 1987, this car left the line with the following options ? power front seats, exterior temperature display, four-speed automatic transmission, rear headrests, cruise control, central locking, heated and powered sideview mirrors, air-conditioning, power windows, thermal insulating glass, rear window defrosters, headlight cleaning system, among others.
Dressed in Pearl Black Metallic (code 199 and sometimes referred to as Blue Black), the paint and trim on this example is in overall excellent order, with only some minor blemishes visible at close range.
The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, as is the cargo area in the trunk.
The body-colored bumpers fit tightly to the body and Mercedes? technically brilliant Monowiper system is featured, along with tinted glass.
Due to their performance, the 16-valve cars were different from the other 190 models.
The body kit on the 2.
3-16 reduced the drag coefficient to 0.
32, one of the lowest cd values on a four-door sedan of that era while reducing lift at speed.
The steering ratio was quicker and the steering wheel smaller than that on other 190s, while the fuel tank was enlarged to 18.
5 gallons.
This Benz rolls on Japanese Goodyear Revspec radials, size 215/45R16 at every corner.
Each tire is mounted on a factory alloy wheel.
There is a spare tire with a factory 15-inch wheel with an original Pirelli P6 radial.
The main tires are in very good shape while the wheels are in excellent order.
The suspension on 16-valve models is very different from the standard 190 (W201).
As well as being lower and stiffer, it has quicker dampers, larger anti-roll bars, harder bushings and hydraulic Self-Levelling Suspension (SLS) on the rear.
This allows the rear ride height to remain constant even when the car is fully loaded.
The Cosworth engine was based on the M102 four cylinder 2.
3-litre eight-valve unit producing 136 horsepower, already fitted to the 190 and E-Class.
Cosworth developed the cylinder head.
It was made from light alloy using Coscast?s unique casting process and brought with it dual overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder, meaning 16 valves total which were developed to be the ?largest that could practically be fitted into the combustion chamber.
? The heads for the engines were cast at Cosworth's Coscast foundry in Worcester and sent to Germany to be fitted to the rest of the engine, parts of which were different from the standard 2.
3L engine, including light pressed alloy pistons and rings designed to withstand higher engine speeds, while connecting rods, bearings and bearing caps were found to be strong enough as standard and left unaltered.
The oversquare 95.
50 x 80.
25 mm bore and stroke dimensions ensured that the car could easily rev up to the 7,000 rpm redline.
This car sports Remus dual exhausts.
Driver convenience equipment includes electronic climate control, power rack-and-pinion steering, power four-wheel disc brakes, cruise control, power windows, power locks, heated and powered passenger sideview mirror.
A driver?s side front airbag and anti-lock brakes are standard safety equipment.
Inside, the car has black Recaro front bucket seats and a two-person rear bench, all with fabric inserts (code 71).
The strictly four-seater interior has strong side bolsters for front and rear passengers.
The seats are in very good shape overall, as is the matching black carpet, topped with original, blue Yanase floor mats.
The headliner is neutral and in good order while the dashboard has full instruments, including three extra dials - an oil temperature gauge, stopwatch and voltmeter - were included in the center console.
An AMG/Momo four-spoke steering wheel, a console-mounted shifter and a Japanese aftermarket AM/FM stereo complete the interior.
The W201 introduced a five-link rear suspension subsequently used in E and C class models, front and rear anti-roll bars, anti-dive and anti-squat geometry?as well as airbags, ABS brakes and seatbelt pretensioners.
Its extensive use of light weight high-strength steel enabled it to withstand a concrete barrier offset crash at 35 mph without serious passenger injury or cabin deformation.
Competition to this Mercedes in 1987 included Audi?s 90, BMW?s 325i and Cadillac?s Cimarron with 2.
8L V-6.
These compact Benzes have a lot of kick to them and this one would make a great daily driver for someone who does a lot of urban driving and needs something maneuverable yet doesn?t take a lot of space.
