Med Technician

Serves as a Medical Technician (Phlebotomist) in the Central Receiving Unit with the responsibility of obtaining blood samples by venipuncture from inpatients and outpatients according to physician orders. Routes or delivers samples and maintain records of blood draws. Correctly identifies each patient using at least two valid, acceptable patient identifiers as required by The Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists (CAP) and other regulatory agencies. Maintains patient confidentiality. Correctly identifies acceptable venipuncture site or finger stick site. Maintains sterile technique and performs venipuncture according to guidelines. Determines appropriate number and type of tubes of blood, ensuring that tubes meet quality and volume standards required for optimum clinical sampling. Labels each tube as required and instructed with all necessary identifiers and information, in the presence of the patient and before proceeding. Performs Glucose Tolerance Tests, Bleeding Times and other specialized blood collections as indicated. Processes complex specimens from inpatient, outpatient and outlying outpatient and community based clinics. Work Schedule:

Specialized
Experience:
You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-03 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
(a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled. OR, Education:
Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have:
Successful completion of (a) an associate-degree course of study of which the 2nd year of the 2-year program included successful completion of a training course of approximately a year's duration in a certified laboratory assistant school approved by a nationally recognized accrediting agency; (b) 1 year of study that included 6 semester hours in chemistry and/or the biological sciences, plus successful completion of the training course as described in (a) above for GS-3; or (c) 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours of chemistry and/or biological science course work that must have been directly related to the specialization of the position to be filled. OR, Combination:
Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education. To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-4. For example, an applicant who has 9 semester hours of graduate level education (i.e. 50% of graduate education required) and 6 months of creditable specialized experience (i.e. 50% of the required experience) would equal 100% of the required experience for the position. Physical Requirements:
The work requires moderate physical exertion, such as regular and recurring walking, running, sitting, standing, twisting or bending to collect blood or record information. In many situations the duration of the activity (such as most of a workday) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. There is a special requirement for agility and dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination and sense of touch. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
